If you are planning just to stay in Austria or Europe generally, for less than 90 days then you are allowed to stay in the country or Schengen Area, provided you show your return ticket to the border authorities.

Non EU: <3

If you country is listed above then you are allowed to stay in the EU for 90 days.

Non EU: >3

After you have checked in the list above if you are required to get a visa to live in Austria, you should know how to get the visa or resign permit. If you are to stay in Europe for more than 3 months then you should apply for a 6 month visa. If you wish to stay longer then you could extend it, or you could also apply for the residence permit. Bear in mind that some Embassies do require you to start your residence permit process before coming to Austria, that if you already know you will be staying more than 6 months. The residence permit normally last just for one year as a student, so every year you should present the papers asked by the MA35 (government institution in charge of issuing visas, residence permits and the such legal papers) and hand all the documents in due time. Normally you would get just a visa from the Austrian Embassy at home before coming to Austria and then once you have arrived you can either extend the visa or apply for the residence permit in Austria, but again, your embassy should provide you with detailed information.
